The success of rival app Triller depends on whether TikTok survives its to-the-death battle with Donald Trump

Late last week America’s Nik Nak in chief announced he was seriously considering banning one of the world’s favourite social media apps, TikTok. The ban has something to do with security concerns, but the real reason probably has much more to do with Microsoft trying to buy the Chinese social media giant than any feelings The Donald has about privacy violations. Either way, TikTokers across the world reacted with memes and panic.

The video app is being hailed as the new TikTok after a raft of America’s top TikTok creators fled to Triller in anticipation of a TikTok ban. That in turn created a surge in Triller downloads that pushed the app to number one in the world on the download charts over the weekend. In a statement Triller CEO Mike Lu said: “We couldn’t be more thrilled for this recognition and are excited to be embraced with such diversity. It aligns with our guiding principle: Triller – where you do you.”..A subscription gives you full digital access to all Times Select content.
