As Canadians continue to grapple with sticker shock and food affordability in supermarkets, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s proposal for a grocery rebate in the latest federal budget has been marketed as a potential solution.
“We all know our more vulnerable more friends and neighbours are still suffering from higher prices,” Freeland said as she tabled the budget Tuesday. “Our budget contains targeted temporary relief from the effects of inflation for those who need it.” The measure was proposed as a one-time payment that will be delivered through the GST credit mechanism.
