IRS expects to clear tax return backlog from 2021 this week

The IRS said Tuesday that it has almost finished processing roughly 8 million unprocessed tax returns from 2022, but it still has millions of paper returns from 2022 that need to be processed.

The agency kicked off the tax-filing season with roughly 8 million unprocessed returns from 2021; by comparison, the IRS usually enters the tax-filing season with fewer than 1 million remaining items to address.
