Irish central banker job glitch may be a blessing swahapattanaik
New Zealand State Services Commissioner Peter Hughes on June 4 announced an investigation into questions concerning Treasury Secretary Gabriel Makhlouf’s actions and public statements about the causes of unauthorised access to sensitive budget information. Hughes said in a statement that Makhlouf believed he had acted in good faith at all times and was happy to cooperate fully to establish the facts.
New Zealand’s opposition National Party on May 28 released what it said were key details of a budget before the scheduled release. Makhlouf said later that day that the Treasury’s systems had been deliberately and systematically hacked and referred the matter to police for investigation. The New Zealand Treasury said on May 30 that police believed the early accessing of the information was not illegal and were therefore not planning further action. It also said the department had created a “clone” website in advance of the budget and that a special word search could access some content.
The Treasury told Breakingviews it was unable to comment on the investigation while it was in progress.
