🎥 The Banshees of Inisherin plays out against a backdrop of some of Ireland’s most stunning spots 🇮🇪 The cast and crew spent three weeks filming on the largest of the Aran Islands, Inishmore
and Brendan Gleeson as Colm Doherty. Taking place in 1923 as the Irish Civil War rumbles on over on the mainland, the pair are lifelong friends until Colm abruptly calls an end to it, preferring to devote his time to concentrate on his creative calling as a fiddle player.
Also starring Kerry Condon as Pádraic’s sister, Siobhán, and Barry Keoghan as a troubled young islander, Dominic Kearney, the drama deals with the breakup of the relationship, rejection and the shocking consequences that ensue in McDonagh’s distinctive directorial style coming down with black humour and poignancy.
The islands have an austere, windswept beauty. The barren limestone landscape of Inishmore reveals small lanes, white sand beaches and fields criss-crossed with a lattice of dry-stone walls and natural wonders such as The Wormhole, a natural rectangular pool or blow hole on the south side of the island.
Pádraic and Siobhán’s cottage was purpose built in a field just back from a vertiginous cliff in an isolated spot on the highest part of the island called Gort Na gCapall, which translates from the Gaelic as “Field of the Horses”.
