Irate Makhanda students kick up a stink as water outages leave toilets unflushed
Residents and students in Makhanda Local Municipality, Eastern Cape, are thirsting for a solution to the continued barrage of water outages that have plagued the area in recent weeks.
Bukula added that although the university had put in place mitigation strategies, the inability of the municipality to provide water to the university community impacted terribly on the quality of student life. One of the demands put forth by students in the memorandum includes a report to be compiled on the failure to provide water to the community and for accountability structures to be put in place for the external stakeholders that oversee the access of water to the community.
City Press reached out to the spokesperson of the municipality, Anele Mjekula, who failed to provide promised feedback by the time of publication. According to a media statement issued by the municipality on Monday, the problem lies in Howiensons Poort dam, where a team of divers was dispatched to unblock any potential disruptions. Debris and rusted metals were discovered; however, the blockage in the dam still persists.
In a statement that Embling wrote, he said that no one was at the dam at the time of the oversight visit, and it did not seem as if there had been any work done there recently, as everything was still intact.
