Iranian rock climber Elnaz Rekabi returned home to crowds of cheering fans, after competing without a mandatory headscarf at an international competition turned her into a symbol of protests

and highlighted the risks to prominent Iranians who support the movement.

Ms. Rekabi seemed reluctant to embrace the hero’s welcome after she became Iran’s first female athlete to win a medal in the sport climbing world championships in Seoul. In an interview aired by state media after she arrived to cheers of “Elnaz, the champion,” Ms. Rekabi avoided eye contact, confirming an Instagram post where she said she had unintentionally forgotten to wear her hijab, or headscarf, while competing.
