Though Gov. Reynolds called it a 'fairness issue,' Iowa Democrats say she's just trying to 'score political points with the lives of young people.'
Iowa joined 10 other states on Thursday after Gov. Kim Reynolds passed a bill banning transgender women and girls from competing in women’s sports throughout the state.Reynolds, a Republican, called the bill a “fairness issue.”
Iowa Senate Minority Leader Zach Wahls, a Democrat out of Coralville, told Yahoo Sports that he believes the laws and rules in place in the state were already working perfectly before Thursday's bill was passed. “What we’re seeing here is not an attempt to find a non-political solution. What we’re seeing is playing politics, scoring political points with the lives of young people.”
Iowa is the 11th state to pass such a law in recent months, joining Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, South Dakota and Montana. Idaho and West Virginia have passed similar laws, too, but they are currently pending in court.
