The IOC also said it will not hold a flower ceremony nor medal ceremony for the individual women's event if Russia's Kamila Valieva, 15, wins a medal.
The IOC's decision, made by its executive board, will ensure that the nine skaters who helped Team USA win a silver medal in the team event will not get to accept their medals at a ceremony in Beijing. It will also impact eight skaters from Japan, which won bronze, and possibly two women who medal in the individual event.
"We are devastated that will leave Beijing without their medals in hand," U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee spokesperson Kate Hartman said in part of a statement."But we appreciate the intention of the IOC to ensure that the right medals are awarded to the right individuals. And rest assured, when that time comes, they will be awesomely celebrated."
It is immediately unclear when the questions surrounding Valieva's case will be resolved, but it could be several weeks, months or even more than a year. In track and field, for instance, a 21-year-old American high jumper named Erik Kynard finished second to Russian Ivan Ukhov at the 2012 Olympics. In 2019, Ukhov was banned for doping and some of his past results were disqualified, effectively upgrading Kynard from silver to gold. – a full decade after what should have been Kynard's gold-medal moment.
