TurboTax owner Intuit has agreed to pay $141 million to millions of customers across the country to settle claims from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., that it deceived users–many of whom were low-income–into paying for tax services it advertised were free, New York State Attorney General Leticia James

Per the agreement, TurboTax will mail a check of $30 to almost 4.4 million filers who used the company’s Free Edition for tax years 2016 through 2018 for each year they were charged even though they were eligible for free filing. The attorney general’s investigation found that Intuit used several unfair practices to restrict customers’ participation in the Internal Revenue Service’s Free File Program, including by using “confusingly similar names” for its Free File product and its “Free Edition” product.
