The United States Africom says that in order to fight terrorism in Somalia, there is a need for 'intervention beyond traditional military means', after undertaking an air strike that killed 12 al-Shabaab fighters 45 km southwest of Hobyo on Friday.

With President Joe Biden's government providing around 500 troops, Africom commander General Michael E Langley said:"US Africa Command provides support to the Somali government to address terrorist threats, but we are only part of the US efforts there." Africom noted that Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud had said that he intended to fight terrorism through economic reform, religious tolerance, and political reconciliation.
