The United Nations began marking International Women’s Day on March 8, 1975, the International Year of the Woman.
A Women’s Day was first held in 1909 in New York. The following year, the International Socialist Women’s Conference suggested the need for one to be held annually as a way to highlight the issues of women’s rights, particularly the right to vote. On March 8, 1917, Russian female textile workers, in what is now known as St. Petersburg, began a demonstration that helped spark revolution. They were also granted the vote.

It would take another two years, and an appeal to the Privy Council in England, before women were fully acknowledged under Canadian law. This was less than a century ago.

She says there’s no reason Canada couldn’t be following the example of Scandinavian countries, in what’s been dubbed the Nordic model; it incorporates progressive parental leave policy that encourages both men and women to take time off with their children, as well as affordable, accessible, quality childcare.
Young says it’s impossible to discuss gender and equality without also talking about racial discrimination.
