A problem-riddled Twitter could finally meet its match in a brand new app called Threads from social media giant Meta. If it succeeds, what could it mean for social media?

abc.net.au/news/threads-by-meta-to-rival-twitter/102561536Meta has launched its own competitor in the battle for users fleeing Twitter, releasing Threads onto app stores in 100 countries several hours ahead of its original plans.

So far you can only log in with Instagram, which makes it easy for those who already have an account, and then follow the same people you have on there whether they have made a new Threads account or not. It is also not to be confused with the app that already has the @threads handle, coincidentally describes itself as being like "Twitter for work" and is now in the unfortunate position of updating its socials and store listings to say "not affiliated with Threads by Meta".

"It's owned by Meta, so it's got an enormous arsenal of money and the ability to push it on its own platforms behind it. So it's definitely got promise."
