Clinicians give guidance on how to identify children with cerebral palsy and appropriately treat the condition.

When we think about the transformative power of research, we often think about new drug development, discovering a new molecular pathway or developing a new device or procedure. Another way research transforms care is when experts gather the latest evidence and use it to inform guidelines for the care of people with specific conditions.

As the medical home for children with complex care needs, primary care providers serve as a sounding board and support for families, source of referrals to specialists and therapists and someone who can help keep the whole health of the child and family at the center of care. Research shows that cerebral palsy can be accurately diagnosed at nine months of age or even earlier. Because of this, the new guidelines recommend standard developmental screens at nine, 18 and 30 months. If a neuromotor disorder is suspected, primary care providers should take three simultaneous actions: begin a diagnostic workup, refer to a specialist for diagnostic evaluation and refer the family to early intervention programs and therapies.

Research: Men Speak More Abstractly Than WomenResearch: Men Speak More Abstractly Than WomenWhen someone gives a speech, leads a meeting, or sends us an email, we don’t generally think much about how abstract or concrete their language is. But the authors’ research suggests that this subtle difference in communication style can substantially impact how people are perceived, as more-abstract speech tends to be associated with power and leadership. Moreover, the authors found that on average, women tend to use more concrete language while men use more abstract language, meaning that the way women are socialized to communicate can sometimes make them less likely to be seen as leaders. As such, they argue that to encourage everyone to reach their leadership potential, we must acknowledge that this bias exists — and take proactive steps to ensure that how someone speaks doesn’t drown out what they’re saying.
