The provision of affordable housing for teachers and police is among the concerns raised by MPs in a stoush over a plan to build thousands of new apartments.

Crossbench MPs are demanding more meaningful reforms to tackle NSW’s housing supply and affordability crisis as they consider supporting a Liberal bill designed to scuttle Premier Chris Minns’ signature planning policy.

“The government’s planning reforms will not solve the housing affordability crisis. They will create more houses, 10 years from now, but those houses will remain out of reach and unaffordable for most people unless serious housing reform is undertaken sooner rather than later,” she said. Shooters, Fishers and Farmers upper house MP Mark Banasiak has not decided if he will back the bill. He described the Liberals’ move to block the government’s signature housing policy as a political one, but called on the government to be more realistic about the prospect of thousands of homes being built.Opposition housing spokesperson Scott Farlow said the Liberals were not opposed to density around train stations but wanted to give councils the power to decide how best to do it.
