And those are just a sampling of the collectible design pieces: the kitchen is outfitted with Gaggenau appliances and brass pans, whereas bathrooms have seaweed-green or warm brown tiles by Heath Ceramics. “We looked at older houses from New England,” McKinley says of his inspiration. “Then we tried to pull some modern references to play off of that and blur those lines a little bit.”
But there was no bigger influence than Montauk itself: “Many people come to Montauk to disappear into nature – there’s just this wild coastline. It’s always attracted travellers and adventurers,” he says. “I think we wanted to have that feeling of these collected furniture pieces, these collected objects, some colour palettes that are inspired by the land here and an ocean away.
