Liverpool repurchased their iconic former training ground in June for a fee understood to be around £13m
When Matt Beard was first appointed Liverpool Women's boss back in 2012, he and his players were invited down to Melwood to spend some time with the men's team.
The fact that relegation coincided with Jurgen Klopp's side lifting the Premier League trophy inevitably led to a discourse centred around the club's apparent negligence of its women's team. But, in many ways, relegation was the catalyst for the side's rebirth. Moving to a new training base also formed a big part of the five-year plan formulated by Beard when he was re-hired as manager in May 2021. On the pitch, success was almost instant, with the Reds romping to the Championship title in their former gaffer's first season back at the helm.
Training sessions were dictated by the schedules of the League Two side and, with many of the WSL's top teams training at state of the art men's facilities such as Chelsea's Cobham and Arsenal's London Colney, it was abundantly clear Solar Campus would not be fit for purpose for much longer. As such, Melwood was uninhabitable while work was ongoing. Step forward Alex Inglethorpe, Liverpool's Academy Director, who ensured Beard's team had adequate space to train at the AXA Training Centre over the summer.
The AXA Melwood Training Centre, named to reflect club partner AXA's dual commitment to Liverpool's men's and women's teams, will also be home to the girls’ Pro Game Academy, allowing the club to develop and train some of the best young talent in the game. The venue will also be used for community outreach projects via the LFC Foundation, as well as for offering education to young people through the Fowler Education and Football Academy.
