The Duchess of Sussex's lawsuit against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of The Mail on Sunday and the Mail Online, has officially begun. And it's a long legal road for all involved.
, with a landing page comprised of a sprawling, scathing statement from Prince Harry: “I have been a silent witness to her private suffering for too long. To stand back and do nothing would be contrary to everything we believe in,” he wrote.
But much was bubbling under the surface. Lawyers were hired. Paperwork was submitted. And despite a last minute request by Associated Newspapers to postpone due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fight officially began on Friday, April 24—albeit argued remotely. Earlier in the week, the Sussexes issued a new announcement: going forth, they would have a zero engagement policy with the British tabloids. The earth was officially scorched.
It’ll be a long legal road for all involved. Overall, Meghan Markle is suing for alleged misuse of private information, copyright infringement, and breach of the Data Protection Act. But April 24 wasfor the trial itself, with Associated Newspapers asking a judge to strike out parts of her case—namely, her claim that her father was "harassed, humiliated and exploited" by the paper.
It’s hard to read—as is anything where someone’s confusion is so palpable. But this public, painful airing was perhaps a necessary one: the Duchess is presenting the texts, and others, as evidence.
