A new wave of corporate cold feet over overt displays of support for LGBTQ+ communities is taking hold in Indiana and across the country.

Although Indy Pride is still receiving significant support from the corporate community, exceeding its fundraising goal of $607,000 for this year with $641,000 in committed donations, it is far from immune to the changing winds that could pose an existential threat.Indy Pride, like many LGBTQ+ nonprofits, depends on corporate sponsorships to function. They make up about 35% of Indy Pride’s income, Executive Director Shelly Snider said.

The sponsors didn’t withdraw their donations totaling about $5,000, though, indicating that so far the biggest chilling effect on Indiana’s biggest Pride event has been some supporters' reluctance to use their influence to advocate rather than pulling back monetary support. Hershey said the transgender community is especially vulnerable, not only to the wave of legislation targeting their rights, but also to corporate fear.

As the co-owner of a small business that caters to a close-knit, word-of-mouth market, Hummer acknowledged she is able to make decisions based on her values and beliefs. But she said even large corporations ought to care about upholding values and morals they stand for, no matter how large they get.
