A powwow dancer and member of the Nisga’a Nation, Julia Kozak said she designs and creates her own regalia.

In a chapel at the Archdiocese of Edmonton office on Thursday, visual artist Julia Kozak shared some of the creative process and struggles behind a garment she designed for one of Francis’s Edmonton appearances.

A powwow dancer and member of the Nisga’a Nation, Julia Kozak said she designs and creates her own regalia, which caught the eye of papal visit organizers who asked her to fashion a vestment for the open-air mass. “It’s like God has given me these gifts and talents that I can use,” she said, “and if I don’t use them for something, then they kind of fall flat.”

To convey balance, the design also includes a symmetric or Greek cross in white doeskin leather, while a copper-coloured image of the eucharist at the centre represents the connection between heaven and Earth.“Water will be a theme that you’ll see through the beadwork,” he added, which consists of shells and freshwater pearls as well as clear, copper, gold, and turquoise beads.
