SYDNEY — Seven Cape Breton University students from India are mourning the loss of their housemate who died due to a fire at their rental unit Saturday ...
One of the Cape Breton University students from India who was displaced after a fire at their Sydney rental unit stands at the door of the Travel Lodge where the Red Cross put them for temporary housing. The students don't want their pictures used as they haven't told their families in India about the fire Saturday night because they don't want them to worry.
Four of the eight roommates were home when the fire at 222 Park St., Sydney broke out. Vinay was one of them, working in his room, when he started to hear a faint buzzing sound. When the sound didn't stop, Vinay went out of his second floor room to see what was happening. "They didn't give us an update for about half an hour," Vinay said."Even then, we were still thinking he will come out. They will be able to help him at the hospital. We still can't believe it. As time kept passing by, we had to believe it."
"As we grieve together, there are a variety of services that have been made available to students, faculty and staff, including grief counselling. We are also supporting students who are currently displaced," reads the statement. The students said they've received a lot of support from CBU Students’ Union in regard to clothing and food. They set up four or five days of meals from two local Indian restaurants to help the men out.
The semi-detached home is owned by two businesses, one in Ontario and one in Nova Scotia, which was registered in January. According to Nova Scotia's Property-Online registry, the lot and dwelling were purchased in February. As per the Nova Scotia Residential Tenancies Act, a landlord is required to provide a signed copy of the lease to tenants as well as do repairs and maintenance in a timely manner, which includes fire alarms.
