Survivors of one of India’s worst rail tragedies for decades have told theipaper of the horror they witnessed as bodies were strewn about like “broken toys” on the tracks after the collision Gurvinder Singh reports

“Suddenly, around 6.55pm, there was a deafening sound and we feared that a railway bridge might have collapsed. Soon, the compartment overturned and people started falling on each other and the power went off.

The crash, in Balasore district in the eastern state of Odisha, involved three trains. The Coromandel Express, travelling between Kolkata and Chennai, derailed after hitting a stationary freright train. Most of the passengers on the trains were migrant labourers and patients suffering from chronic diseases such as cancer heading to south India for treatment.

Authorities worked on Sunday to clear the wreckage, while rescuers and families continued to search for victims.Jaya Varma Sinha, a senior railway official, said preliminary investigations revealed that a signal was given to the high-speed Coromandel Express to run on the main track.
