Founded in 2019 and launched in March 2020, the app has grown a significant following in its native India, and has made one of its first international outposts Brazil, where it packed on a million downloads in just 48 hours after launching there earlier this week.

“If Twitter becomes weak, people look for alternatives. They will go to Koo, which is expanding quite well. It’s an opportunity for Koo. The lack of a formal Indian data protection act also worries privacy expert Pat Walshe. “From a privacy perspective, it’s important to consider that the government has yet to introduce a data protection act imposing clear obligations and providing rights for individuals,” he says. “This is important when considering the data the app collects.”
