Grace Wisher, a 13-year-old black girl, is often overlooked in the storytelling of the nation’s most visual emblem:
, parties, and lots of fireworks. Everyone can get excited about a long weekend, free of work and school, and preferably spent by the beach. But besides soaking up some sun and hanging out with friends, what does this holiday— July 4, 1776 — that the Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, a formal document that laid out the reasons why the 13 original colonies wanted to leave the British Empire and declared them a new nation.
In future generations, it would come to be a manifesto of American ideals: “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” it, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” It's key to remember that these rights have not been equally afforded to all of America's inhabitants — like black and brown people, women, and theThe American colonists had been upset with British rule for a long time — most famously because the British government taxed them without giving them any sort of democratic representation.
That conflict escalated into open fighting between colonial militias and the British army at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, in April 1775. It was another year before the shadow government formed by the colonies — called the Continental Congress — decided that the colonies and Britain were never, ever, ever getting back together again.
