The survey data indicates that the average annual household consumption expenditure stood at approximately R143,691 during the survey year. However, a closer examination of the data reveals a significant disparity between the average and median expenditure.
While the average figure paints a picture of overall spending, the median household consumption expenditure was considerably lower at R82,861. This substantial gap underscores the unequal distribution of resources within South Africa. The wealthier households, with their higher spending habits, exert a disproportionate influence on the average, while a large segment of the population operates with significantly lower expenditure levels.The survey also sheds light on spending patterns across different household structures. Male-headed households, comprising just over 60% of total household consumption expenditure, spent an average of R159,315 annually. In contrast, female-headed households, accounting for slightly less than 40% of total expenditure, spent an average of R123,346. Furthermore, 75.6% of total household spending in 2023 was directed towards four key expenditure categories, highlighting the essential nature of these areas for South African households. This indicates that three out of every four rand spent by households went towards these fundamental needs, emphasizing their critical role in the overall financial well-being of South African families.
