South Africa appears to be in denial about a beckoning future without the ANC at the helm — and not much work is being done to prepare the nation for the post-2024 elections period.

Mnguni, who was reporting back to a plenary session on the work done by a commission on “future proofing” the country, said he knew there were people who believed the ANC would only lose power in 2029, but they were struggling to accept reality. The youth were at risk of an uncertain future, he said, “because our parents are doing exactly what their parents in the 1970s did. They’re scared to speak out. And they’re scared to stand up for the truth. And that’s why there was an intergenerational fight in the 1970s where the students said we are going to do it for ourselves.”

He referred to the decision by the ANC in Gauteng to drop former MEC for economic development Parks Tau from the provincial cabinet as part of the evidence that the ANC was not prepared to shed its corruption image.
