From the delicate aroma of cherry blossoms in spring to the scent of sizzling yakitori and cigarette smoke that spills out of izakayas in the evening, daily life incomes with a head-spinning array of scents. When it comes to personal fragrance, though, the country is known for its particularly light touch.
Kurashi no Kaori—literally ‘fragrance of living’ in English—was established at the tail end of 2021, and offers an approach to home fragrance that is all about curating a sophisticated olfactory calm. With a chic atelier in the mountains and a sleek new store in Ginza, it’s quickly established itself as one of the country’s most stylish new perfume brands. “The main reason I started Kurashi no Kaori was that I wanted more people to incorporate fragrance into their daily lives,” says Konaka.
