Giovani Santillan will put his undefeated record on the line Saturday night in Shawnee, Okla., when he faces Erick Bone in a scheduled 10-round welterweight bout after one of the longest layoffs of his professional boxing career.
The Mira Mesa native suffered a nasty cut above his right eye in that fight; the nature of the cut required extensive healing time before serious sparring could resume. Santillan’s previous experience fighting after an extended layoff came between April 2018 and November 2019, when a contract dispute kept him out of action between wins over Alejenadro Barboza and Wilfredo Buelvas .
The 33-year-old Bone is a tough, veteran and orthodox fighter who is seemingly willing to take any fight, anywhere. He’s coming off six consecutive victories, including a fifth-round knockout of Robert Verdugo in March.
