Sharon Van Etten's new music video, 'Porta,' takes the viewer on an emotional marathon through exercise.
Sharon Van Etten’s newest music video, for “Porta,” shows the singer doing a workout with her trainer,in North Carolina. Before Van Etten’s trembly-sweet yet mighty voice kicks in, the countdown beat starts with Cook reciting instructional moves: “over, right, swing.” The music video goes on to show the two women in the studio stretching, doing side bends, and lifting their arms to the sky.
The idea of filming herself mid-workout came out of Van Etten’s experience during the pandemic. In September of 2019, Van Etten had moved to Los Angeles after living in New York City for 18 years. When the lockdowns started, she fell into an isolated bubble and hit an emotional low. “It was not taking care of myself like everyone and missing my friends back east,” says Van Etten. “I was homeschooling my kid while we were figuring out the bubble.
More often than not, workout montages in music videos have a sexy appeal which can detract from the concept of centering oneself. Think: Harsh pelvic gyrations in “Perfect” with a leotard-wearing Jaime Lee Curtis and John Travolta in itty-bitty shorts, or a sweat-soaked Teyana Taylor slinking her way around the gym in Kanye’s “Fade.” Yet, the draw-you-in factor in the “Porta” music video is that Van Etten shows her real, stripped-down self.
Still, while Van Etten wanted to show herself overcoming a difficult time, there’s no denying she looks great, too. Her clothing of choice was Year of Ours, a label that Cook introduced to her. With her hair slicked back as she stretches in her black cropped top, Van Etten is reminiscent of an indie Trinity in. Even the clothing had an emotional appeal for Van Etten: “I was total ‘frumpy mama’.
Perhaps the most memorable clip in “Porta” is in the opening scene when we see Van Etten take a breath in her car before entering the pilates studio, a pint-sized moment of self-reflection. Originally, Van Etten had imagined dubbing in a banal voicemail from her partner during her quiet slice of contemplation, but that idea was ultimately abandoned. “There’s something way more powerful about the silence in the car, getting in a zone to prepare yourself for an intense workout,” says Van Etten.
