, Piper says many of her peers continued on with life as though a deadly virus had not been rampaging the country for almost two years. “People just want to live their normal lives,” Piper said. “But none of this is normal.”
As schools reopened for the fall semester, many welcoming students back on campus fully in-person for the first time since March 2020,caused confusion and distrust. Students at some schools are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19, while others at schools in the same state don’t need to wear masks even if they are not vaccinated.
Piper, who is vaccinated, chooses to wear a mask when she’s inside buildings though she says she can feel thefrom other students. “People look at me like ‘why are you wearing a mask?’ And I’m like ‘we’re in a pandemic.’” She says she’s noticed that, although her school is a predominantly white institution, the other students she’s seen wearing masks around campus seem to be mostly students of color.
