China and other parts of Asia are scrambling to prevent the new coronavirus from coming back to where it first broke out. China has also sent medical gear and doctors to help other impacted countries.
In this March 12, 2020, photo, a traveler waits near a tourist information booth at the Capital International Airport terminal 3 in Beijing. As the number of new cases dwindles in China and multiplies abroad, the country once feared as the source of the COVID-19 outbreak is now worried about importing cases from abroad. China hasn't imposed any travel bans, but Beijing said this week that all people arriving from overseas would have to self-quarantine for 14 days.
The outbreak is far from over in Asia and could well explode again when restrictions put in place to stymie it are lifted. But the panic that seized the region has shifted to the Mideast, Europe and the Americas as those areas deal with the rapid spread of the virus for the first time. Now, as new infections have eased at home, South Korea is stepping up border controls to prevent the virus from being reintroduced by travelers from overseas.
The vast majority of people recover from the new virus. According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe illness may take three to six weeks to recover. In the north, the Epidemic Prevention and Control Center in Zhengzhou city said a 30-year-old construction worker who had traveled to Milan via Abu Dhabi falsely reported his foreign travels. It didn’t specify how he did so. He has been put in isolation with a fever and police are investigating.
