The Esperanto community has a \u0022particular sensitivity\u0022 for linguistic and cultural rights, says local organizer Nicolas Viau.

The 107th World Esperanto Congress kicked off Saturday in Montreal — a first for the city and the province.

The theme for this year’s congress is Language, Life, Land: The Decade of Indigenous Languages. A number of experts on the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous languages are due to speak at the conference, which is being held at the Université du Québec à Montréal.Article content Over the course of the week, participants will be able to attend sessions on a number of subjects, take in an original Esperanto-language play and attend an awards ceremony for Esperanto literature. They’ll also be able to buy books in Esperanto and meet people attending from dozens of countries.Article content

The Universal Esperanto Association says it has national associations in 70 countries and individual members in 120 countries.
