We bid farewell to a handful of artists and cultural figures in 2022 who made a significant impression on Houston.
A dynamic guitarist and showman, David William Kearney grew up in Florida but maintained he was born in Houston, though a sibling disputed that upon his death. He nevertheless always pulled a crowd in Houston, including a memorable Cactus Music show where he left the stage to walk outside the perimeter of the building without interrupting an epic guitar solo. Shorty enjoyed late career renown, but for years was unheralded for his time spent playing with Ray Charles, B.B.
Liu was a musician so be brought an artist’s sensitivity to his work with the Lovett Group, a family real estate organization. He was a key figure in the conception of the revelatory but short-lived Day for Night music and art festival, and also played a part with his family in the development of the dormant Barbara Jordon Post Office into POST Houston, which included the 713 Music Hall, taking unused space and giving it a second life with music, food, art and culture.
Among repeated water events in the city, Gonzales captured one of the most iconic: A man in a yellow rain slicker with an Air Jordan t-shirt trudging knee-deep through flood waters. Nothing unusual . . . except that the guy in his right hand was toting an armadillo by the tail, a peculiar sort of empathy that suited a peculiar city well.
