The owners of this Maryland home brought in a designer to make over their white kitchen, which 'stuck out like a sore thumb.' Here are some of the design elements of their $275,000 renovation.
The kitchen remodel in the home of David and Nancy Watts in Towson, Md.When they purchased the modest-sized, woodland house in Towson, Md., from an interior designer in 1999 for $570,000, businessman David Watts and his wife, Nancy Watts—aged 59 and 58, respectively—fell in love with its natural wood finishes, especially the hewed cedar walls and beautiful chestnut beams in the family room.
In 2020, after saving for almost a year for their dream renovation, and scouring the market for designs in a natural wood grain, the couple’s stars finally aligned when an Instagram search led them to Tanya Smith-Shiflett, founder and chief designer of Unique Kitchens and Baths . “They wanted the kitchen to be reflective of the surrounding nature. We opted for warm woods in raw, unfussy forms, and smooth limestone-like finishes for the floors,” says Ms. Smith-Shiflett.
