In political stunt, Martha’s Vineyard-bound migrants flown out of San Antonio airfield
Simon Azar-Farr, an immigration lawyer in San Antonio who has represented corporate and individual clients, said private companies that fly or bus immigrants to so-called sanctuary cities or states could run afoul of federal laws that make it a crime to transport undocumented migrants.
“These transportation companies, whether they are chartered airlines or bus companies, should be very wary that they may well find themselves subject to criminal liability under for unlawful transportation of aliens inside the United States,” Azar-Farr said. “They would be wise not to get caught up in the politics of the moment and expose themselves to criminal prosecution.”“If the Justice Department found evidence that Abbott ordered his director of communication to start doing this and that person passed it on to staffers, and those people had five runners going around finding aliens, everybody can be on the hook,” Azar-Farr said.
Rachel Rollins, U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, said she would talk to Justice Department officials about the DeSantis-orchestrated flights. She said she did not have enough information to offer an opinion as to whether DeSantis broke any laws.
