Each accused the other of mistruth, though through a veneer of civility. Despite zingers here and there, they remained throughout ‘Premier Notley’ and ‘Mr. Kenney’

EDMONTON — There were four politicians on stage Thursday night, but most eyes were on just two of them: United Conservative Party leader Jason Kenney and NDP premier Rachel Notley, the frontrunners vying over whose vision for Alberta will win out when the province votes on April 16.

It opened with debate on Alberta’s relationship with Ottawa, the economy and pipelines — not Notley’s strongest file, given the billions in provincial GDP lost in her five years as premier.

“We can’t act out of a place of anger, as much as we may feel it and as much as it may make us feel better,” she said. The New Democrats are hoping to make the remainder of the campaign about Kenney the man, leader of a party that has seen a stream of its candidates criticized after the unearthing of homophobic or racist comments. The most recent of these is UCP candidate Mark Smith, who in a sermon six years ago mused about whether love between gay people was real love. When the debate addressed abortion, racism and gay-straight alliances in schools, Notley was in her element.

Kenney looked somber and earnest as he invoked the broad and diverse base of his party, calling Notley’s claims they were racists “offensive” — but sounded frustrated as he shot back at Notley over sexual misconduct accusations against two members of her caucus, whom she has refused to name over privacy concerns of the complainants.
