I am a global CEO, entrepreneur, business leader, linguaphile, philanthropist, feminist, and mother. After living, studying, and working in five countries across the globe—and quitting a particularly nightmarish job—I decided it was time to chart my own future.
In Dialogue: theSkimm Cofounders Danielle Weisberg And Carly Zakin On Risking It All And Redefining News Media For Women, Part 1The seeds of many successful companies have taken root when their founders identified a gap without a bridge, a need going unmet, or a problem waiting for a solution. But identifying an opportunity is just the very first step—and what comes after is the hard part. Entrepreneurship and risk go hand-in-hand.
There’s a defining moment in every founder’s journey when they have to decide to cross that threshold, to pass the point of no return, to drop the safety net below them and leap.
We’ve always been passionate about the news and the role we could play in delivering it. Our friends—all smart, busy women—were coming to us about what they’d missed because they had very limited time to read up on everything. It was clear they weren’t being properly served by traditional outlets, and we realized we could create something that was speaking directly to an audience in a way that resonated with them.
We had to get creative, enlisting our friends and family to share the Daily Skimm newsletter with their networks. It was pretty amazing to see not only how quickly and organically our subscriber list grew but how many people were coming back to us. That gave us the confidence and the success to point to when we felt it was the right time for us to look for investors.: I don’t know that we would do anything differently.
