Discover the Black designers included in Moda x Fifteen Percent Pledge’s trunk show, which runs through April 7th.

, which asks retailers to dedicate 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses, is formulated on the fact that Black people make up 15% of the U.S. population. Since committing in 2021, Moda Operandi has been working towards the goal. The collaborative trunk show donates 5% of the total proceeds to the Pledge and is proof of the retailer’s progress.

Curated by James herself, the trunk show features eight distinct Black designers who represent a range of styles. For example, there’s Head of State, whose collection offers modern miniskirts and cutout maxi dresses. There’s Agbobly, whose beaded denim cargo pants and gingham cotton pieces evoke retro nostalgia. And, of course, there’s James’ brand Brother Vellies, the playful shoe collection of strappy sandals and platform slides.

While bringing the trunk show to life, James and the Moda Operandi team put their heads together to design an editorialized shop that also tells the stories of the designers included. Featuring hand-selected pieces from each designer, the shop also showcases context and quotes from the designers themselves. “Our goal was to further challenge how the fashion industry interacts with Black creators, and expand the visibility of these incredible brands,” James expands.

As for future trunk shows or like projects, the designer and founder is keeping her mind open. “Whether it’s another trunk show, an incubator program or a community event—our partners understand that the work to support Black entrepreneurs requires more than just securing shelf space. It takes a village, and we’re excited for future opportunities with our partners to expand our work together.”

Taofeek Abijako, the Nigerian-born, Brooklyn-based designer and founder behind Head of State, first established his brand in 2016. Inspired by elevated streetwear, Abijako explores post-colonial youth culture through his clothing. In his latest collection, the designer pays homage to his two homes, Nigeria and New York by reinventing traditional West African silhouettes.
