New upgrades to barracks, DFAC, gym facilities, and winter maintenance facility
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - An increase in soldier suicides has changed the way the U.S Army Alaska has looked into improving the quality of life for soldiers on Fort Wainwright.
Fort Wainwright Alaska leadership has already begun addressing these issues by making upgrades to the soldier barracks. They have renovated day rooms to promote social interaction and installed blackout shades in the soldier’s quarters. “So that’s a huge win for the team,” Surrey explained. “In terms of if they’re having other issues with sleep, I can tell you that the surge of behavioral health assets that General Eifler is adamant about, I believe the Army is absolutely gonna help us with that. Giving the soldiers more access will help with that because they now can tell a licensed counselor or potentially a doctor that ‘I’m having issues with sleep,’ and then they can better diagnose it.
On the Army Emergency Relief Program website Retired Gen. John F. Campbell, AER Chairman is quoted saying: “Soldiers that live in the Barracks have access to the ‘DFAC’ or to what we call a “KIOSK,” It is called the outpost. They can get all the food, three squares a day, you know for free,” Surrey added.
