, writing from the Vodnik detention centre No 5 in northern Moscow, Kara-Murza reveals his experiences as a prisoner, explains why he has sacrificed his freedom and considers how Russia could one day recover from Putin’s dictatorship.
Pro-democracy and anti-Putin campaigner Vladimir Kara-Murza during one of his court appearances after being arrested I was driving home from a meeting on the evening of 11 April. As I passed the entrance to my apartment building I noticed a silver van with tinted windows parked outside but didn’t pay much attention. As I drove into the parking lot, I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw five or six black-uniformed, masked police officers get out of that van and run after my car.
The charge signed by two police officers stated that I “changed the trajectory of my movement” while walking near my house. This was just a pretext to hold me while they cook up something more serious. The first page of Vladimir Kara-Murza’s handwritten replies to interview questions from i, replying from his detention centre cell in Moscow Since my arrest in April I’ve been held in four different facilities. The sizes of my cells have ranged from solitary confinement to six people; I am currently in a cell of four.
