Kalie Wang uses her knowledge of growing indoor microgreens using hydroponics and aeroponic systems to teach the next generation about food sustainability. - ContributedSYDNEY, N.S. — After leaving Lanzhou City in China, an industrial metropolis with more than 3.8 million people, to pursue a Master of Business Administration degree atin 2012, Kalie Wang saw an opportunity to cultivate relationships and harvest a dream.
“I stayed with a Canadian family for one year. The family treated me like their daughter, taking me all over Cape Breton and showing me their slowed-down way of life — a peaceful existence. The family was so friendly, including my professors and everyone in the class.” Kalie Wang is a shining example of a Chinese immigrant that cultivated relationships and harvested a dream in Sydney, Cape Breton. - ContributedWang became a permanent Canadian resident in 2017 and began working towards setting up a business with her husband, who was a fellow international student, to help give back after the warm welcome they experienced.
Hydroponics is a soilless method of growing plants using only water and nutrients under an environment-controlled system.“I always had an interest in gardening, especially cultivating small spaces, because of my city background. So, hydroponics is great because anyone can grow nutritious leafy greens throughout the year without needing an outdoor space.”
