With 28 points from 30 games headed into Monday, it’s an uphill climb. A home loss to a Flyers team that had dropped seven straight coming into the night would have been a gut punch. Instead, the Islanders dispatched Philadelphia, 4-1, at UBS Arena. In the second period alone, Sorokin made a sprawling stop on a two-on-zero rush, denied two more odd-man rushes when the Islanders were on the power play, then stopped Joel Farabee, who was in all alone, in the waning minutes of the period.
The Islanders could barely have afforded a loss in this one — they are in the midst of a stretch in which there’s little choice but to start making up points. They play the Flyers again in Philadelphia on Tuesday, then they won’t leave Elmont again until after the All-Star break.
