An ethereal soundscape in Melbourne’s CBD begins the moment the sun grazes the horizon – and no two listeners will hear the same work.
Melbourne’s CBD is not a quiet place, but this June a new note will join the orchestra of jackhammers, tram brakes and bicycle bells.is a sound work that will flood the streets surrounding the city’s river and when it fades, most who hear it won’t quite know what they’ve just experienced.is a collaboration between composer and soprano Deborah Cheetham Fraillon and artists Byron J Scullin and Thomas Supple.
“I’ve tried to give voice to that river in a way that draws people in and allows them to have that connection, if only for a moment,” says Cheetham Fraillon. To achieve that takes a lot of planning. “You can’t just throw a set of speakers on top of a building and hope for the best,” Cheetham Fraillon explains. To realise the work requires a massive sound system of 12 amplifiers connected to 32 speakers mounted on top of skyscrapers lining the river. All of that infrastructure will be invisible from the streets, and Supple hopes people’s unexpected encounters with the work will leave a lasting impression.
