It will mean massive upheaval for pupils and parents. But, as the general secretary of the National Education Union, Mary Bousted, said yesterday, no teacher takes the prospect of strike action lightly.

She said her members have been pushed to the brink by a real-terms pay cut of 25 per cent since 2010 amid the rising cost of living. This will be the first nationwide industrial action in the teaching profession for 15 years. As with other sectors, the UK Government’s offer of a 5 per cent pay rise is not enough to keep pace with inflation running at double that level.– like nurses, ambulance drivers, rail workers and postal staff – have families to provide for, too.
