'You think a bomb's gone off' The idyllic Lancs coastal town divided on the nuclear giant in its midst
An idyllic north Lancashire town may be the last place you might turn to for solutions to the UK’s current woes - but it’s looking like the unassuming town of Heysham could be at least a part of that.
“They're not going to take the power station down brick by brick and remove it, whatever happens, but there should be a reduction in our rates for living so close to a place like a nuclear power plant. When the power plant trips out, there's a lot of banging and there's steam coming out; that happens about two or three times a year. You think a bomb’s gone off and you don't know what it is. Then you ring up, and they say it's normal, there's nothing to worry about.
What do you think of Lancashire's nuclear power plants at Heysham? Do you think we need more nuclear facilities in Lancashire, or would you prefer to see less? Let us know your thoughts if you live in Heysham in the comments below, or by emailing [email protected] “My major concern is where is our North Sea gas? You've all these gas fields, and yet we are suffering due to a problem in Ukraine and Russia. We have quite a few in the North Sea, we've got them in Heysham and what benefit do we get?
Tracey tells us: “ 've lived in Heysham for 20 years and I live not far from the power station and have never had a problem with it. It's a big part of the community; it brings a lot of jobs especially now the with the new link road that's brought a lot of people up to work here. A spokesperson for Frack Free Lancashire said: "Successive governments have not invested sufficiently in a comprehensive energy strategy - including nuclear. The over-reliance on fossil fuels has been the result of vested interests rather than expediency. As a result, we are on the back foot and new nuclear is not only expensive, it is also time-intensive and will not deliver a short-term panacea.
“They also contribute millions of pounds every year to the local economy through wages and the use of local supply chain companies. We were pleased to see the site included on the UK Government’s list of sites for new nuclear development and look forward to the opportunities future developments will bring for our people.”
