covering the history-making feat, senior editor Rebecca Sun wrote, “It took 59 years for Michelle Yeoh to land her first lead role in a Hollywood film. And it’s taken 95 years for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize a woman who identifies as Asian in its best actress category.”Most people were confused with “what,” “huh,” and “wtf” dominating the comments section.
“The caption is correct, there’s a reason for it if one knows the unfortunate history,” one person wrote. Another explained, “‘Identifies as Asian’ refers to Merle Oberon, who identified as WHITE and was nominated as Best Actress in the 30s. She kept her Sri Lankan heritage a secret until the 80s. So that is what the post is referring to.”
