Ida has been retired from the list of Atlantic hurricane names after the deadly Category 4 hurricane caused destruction from Louisiana to New England last year.
The World Meteorological Organization said Wednesday the name would be retired from the list, which repeats names every six years, and replaced with Imani.
In total, 94 names have been retired since the Atlantic list began in 1953. Names are taken off the list when storms cause high death counts.Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana in August 2021, sustaining winds of 150 miles per hour. The storm, which killed 91 people, brought heavy rainfall, tornadoes, and flash flooding to nine states.
The name retirement occurred during an annual hurricane committee meeting, which reviews the previous year's hurricane season and prepares for what's expected in the next season. On average, there are 84 named"tropical cyclones" across the world every year, accounting for one-third of both deaths and economic losses from weather, climate, and water-related disasters. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, though a date for this year's season has not yet been decided by the hurricane committee.
