'Extraordinary high temperatures' shut the rink
Leeds City Council announced the Ice Cube in Millennium Square would be shut to the public today, Monday, December 19. The ice rink has had to shut because the higher temperatures and wind has had a 'detrimental' effect on ice conditions.
All public skating sessions between 3pm and 9pm today will be cancelled. A note has been posted on the ice rink door to inform anyone turning up why the rink is closed. The council said in a Facebook post: "We apologise for any disappointment and inconvenience this may cause. All tickets purchased for the cancelled sessions will be auto-refunded. We thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
Temperatures have hit a mild 13 degrees in Leeds today - a big change on a run of freezing days that saw the temperature drop below zero many days. On Sunday, there was a brief hint of light snow, and an amber warning in place from the Met Office for ice. A number of parents are having to tell their children they can’t enjoy the ice rink and pointing at the flooded area. “That’s so annoying,” one mum said as she held her hands on her head in frustration.
Student Tia said her and her friends were “really looking forward” to ice skating tonight. “We’ve had this planned for a while to come down. I think we’ll just go around the stalls and get a drink instead.”
