After paying rent and bills, I only have around £348 a month left to pay for food, transport, my phone, debts, plus things like haircuts.
After 18 months, I found myself applying for Universal Credit once again It’s always around 2pm when hunger hits. And it’s not just a case of feeling peckish – it’s a real empty, hollow feeling in the pit of my stomach that makes itself known with a low, deep, growl. But if I eat now, I can’t later on. So I temporarily drown the sensation with a weak, sugary coffee and return to my laptop. It only works for a while. It’s hard to concentrate on job-hunting when you’re that hungry.
And I must admit, even now I am fortunately placed amongst my compatriots. I haven’t been able to make the repayments in months, I have more debt now than when I started that job Thankfully, I’ve managed to pick up the occasional bit of work – some of my pitches have been successful . But it’s been enough not to be forced into one of the Jobcentre’s mandatory job search classes, where the it seems the pressure to take the first available position, despite unsuitability, ramps up.
