“For me, with what I have experienced, I’ve gone through everything — injuries, ups and downs, making it all the way to the national team, making it to the Olympics, accomplishing the goals that I’ve had set for my whole life … ” Johnston said. “So I really do think I have those experiences that can help these guys to make it to the next level and make it to the NHL. It all translates. It’s all similar. I’ve had similar emotions that they’ll have.
The Sudbury-raised sharpshooter served as a guest coach at Flames development camp in mid-July, and that started discussions about becoming a full-time staffer. In her new role, Johnston will be assisting with prospect evaluations, both in-person and via video work, and with on-ice instruction. She will also be working with the Flames Foundation on grassroots programs. As she put it: “I do feel like I’m a part of the Calgary community now — I’ve been here for a while — so I definitely want to help grow the game.”
According to the NHL, there will be more than 100 women working throughout the league in the 2022-23 season in hockey operations, scouting, development, health and safety and analyst roles.
